[Persuasive Design] Examples of pain point

Pain point #1 Laundry

Once in a while, everyone experiences and relates to the “No! everything is pink!” laundry disaster.  Back in college, living in a dorm and sharing everything with three other girls, doing laundry in a laundromat is anything but a pleasant task.  Especially when time and space are limited, and you need to spend time sorting clothes.  Until someday at the beach, something struck my mind.

If you can divide waste into categories for efficient recycling, you can achieve efficient laundry through the same method, right?

Labeling various laundry bags simplify the sorting process, making it easy and clear, and save enormous amount of time.

Pain point#2 Recently, I was vexed by electricity bill.

Obviously I know what needs to be done to save up, however, I don’t always do it.  I don’t always turn thermostat off when leaving the room in the winter. Sometime I left lights on in unoccupied places.

Certainly, saving energy and living green would be a noble cause and great motivation to start a self-control act. There is a great number of articles and researches everywhere to tell you why you should do it.  However, to persuade and remind myself, and to be practical, before saving the earth, I need to save my wallet first.

Instead of using a CO2 sticker, I use a ConEd bill to serve as a mindful nudge. By putting it on top of switch, the purpose is to activate and boost the “turn it off” behavior.

It is such a small token, but I found myself to be more mindful about the on-and-off state of the switch.  In addition, it generally encourages me to be cautious about not just electricity, but also other energy usage in the house. I unplug appliances and cords that are not in use, TV, coffee maker, cell phone charger…etc. I turn faucet off when I brush teeth twice a day. I research online more on DIY cleaning solution before fetching a OTC chemical formula at store.  The outcome is more significant than expected.
