Persuasive Design – MAT analysis

Persuasive design class started with the introduction and discussion of Fogg’s Behavior Model- MAT analysis.

For this week’s assignment, I selected a data viz project I created using external data. From a producer’s perspective, my motivation to create such a project are: 1) Raw data is boring and it’s difficult to make sense of it in its natural form, add visualization to it and you get something that everybody can easily digest.  2) Observe average age of first marriage varies across from different regions during periods of time matters because a growing numbers of women enter the economic mainstream, they will have a profound effect on global economy.  In fact, it all started with a Nike foundation video named The Girl Effect https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C44BOxKhwsQ

The relationship between a woman’s age at the time of marriage and the likelihood of a divorce is fairly known. Typically, the assumption is that women who wait longer are more mature, better able to pick a husband who they can remain faithful to, and more ready for marriage.  Also, women who attend college generally marry a bit later, and college attendance correlates strongly with IQ, which has a very strong correlation with divorce. Financially, college-educated women benefit the most from getting married later.

The target audience/viewers (in mind) are true liberals who watch “”The Daily Show” , “The Colbert Report”, and read the Times.

MAT analysis

Motivation: Viewers/users care and want to learn information like this is because it is useful. The society is shifting, and the nature of marriage has changed.  In the 1950s and before, marriage was designed to manage sexuality and to produce children.  Now, marriage has become a sign of adulthood. Eventually, audience who has the motivation to keep up with information and issue of this sorts are seeking pleasure and hope in life.

Ability: It is fairly easy to use the graph itself– you click on different number on top to see stats in different regions. I would optimize the ability by including more relevant information in the graph: the Girl Effect video link, an concise discussion about why average of first marriage matters to our next generations.

Trigger: This obviously is a basic graph, it is not published, and it is only available in my computer. I would optimize a trigger by getting it published on the Times website, the Daily Show or CNN website, so that people are able to refer or share on their own website or blog.  I would also add a “share now” button in the graph so people can immediately spread what they see on social media.
