Visual Language WK2 Signage Bad vs. Good

Bad example #1: Typo. Recommendation: correct the grammar and don’t drink when you are making a sign.

Don't drink and drive

Bad example#2: This is a classic example of lost in translation, something you see a lot when traveling in Asia.  In Mandarin, the sign means Food For Fresh, Super Fresh Supermarket or something in that context. A correct, meaningful translation would solve the problem.

very suspicious supermarket

Bad example#3: Tuna Tea for lunch? No, thanks.  C Spaghetti? What is that? Poor spacing. Unreadble. Clutter and misalignment of fonts.  Misalignment is ineffective and difficult to see from a distance. You can also see that the business makes no effort to grab attention.  If I am the owner, I’d — 1. Rewrite the board for better clarity. 2. Draw or add few pictures of food or drinks to make it appealing.

Bad example#4: Not a readable sign. A reliable business signage should state the reasons to buy service/product, not confuse or scare customers.  I am not sure where my eyes should go on this one, I even wonder if some of these business do this on purpose? Ears for sale? Is that legal? AIDS? No, thank you.  I would improve this sign by 1. Reposition the sign.  2.  Making it short and to the point– Hearing Aids, $895. Period.  3. When fonts need to go lowercase, please adjust accordingly.

Good example#1. A clear direction sign in a parking structure in Eureka Tower Australia. It draws attention, it’s responsive. Big paint letter on walls and floors. When you look closely the letters might be distorted, but when you look from a distance, it can be read perfectly. You can navigate the parking structure without getting lost.

Good example#2: Aschan Deli in Helsinki, Finland. A quick stop for breakfast, lunch, snack or coffee. This wood texture signage looks simple, modern and fresh while communicates the message– this is a convenient place to eat. The symbol and color theme used in signage and menu, aims to create a consistency, and together they create a holistic feel of the environment.
